My annual pilgrimage to France, the birthplace of smart cards, normally associated with the industry’s Cartes & IDentification conference and exhibition in Paris, took on added significance for me this year. Several things were different about this year’s event. For one thing, it was in December, which meant that the normal cold and rainy weather of November in Paris was replaced with cold and snowy weather.
